The Robbins Museum

Dr. Maurice Robbins 1899-1990 was one of the founders of the Massachusetts Archaeological Society in 1939 and our first president.

He was also the first director of the Bronson Museum, our former headquarters in Attleboro.  He is best know for his excavations at Wapanucket Site in Middleborough, and his authorship of the Amateur Archaeology Handbook which was the training manual for three generations of archaeologists across the country.

He helped sponsor the legislation which established the Massachusetts Historical Commission, and served as the Commonwealth’s first State Archaeologist from 1972-1979.

He authored some 50 articles, reports, and books, mostly on the archaeology or Massachusetts.

When the Massachusetts Archaeological Society moved to its new Middleborough headquarters in 1988, we felt it was appropriate to honor “Doc” Robbins lifelong contribution to the field of archaeology by naming the museum in his honor.

The Robbins Museum is located at 17 Jackson Street, in Middleborough, Massachusetts.
